EU criticizes Belgian budget, sees more austerity

Belgian PM Elio Di Rupo

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Commission has criticized Belgium’s 2012 budget as too optimistic, a person close to the government said Friday, indicating that the country has to adopt more austerity measures or risk sanctions.

The Commission, the European Union’s executive, believes the Belgian government won’t be able to cut its deficit to thepromised 2.8 percent under the current budget, the person said.

The person was speaking on condition of anonymity because the exchange of letters between the government and the Commission was still in an informal phase. He stressed that this exchange of information had been going on for several weeks and no final decision had been taken by the Commission.
