EU official proposes rights, support for crime victims, their relatives

BRUSSELS – When Maggie Hughes heard that her son Robbie was beaten into a coma while vacationing on the Greek island of Crete, he’d already been in a hospital about 10 hours. The news didn’t come from police, hospital officials or the British Embassy, but from a friend who called Robbie’s girlfriend who then called Hughes.

Hughes, who is British, couldn’t find the police station or the hospital when she arrived in Crete. She didn’t speak a word or Greek, have a place to stay or know where the embassy was. It was, in short, a nightmare.

On Wednesday, European Union Justice Commissioner, Viviane Reding proposed that crime victims and their relatives be guaranteed a basic standard of rights, support and assistance, no matter in which of the bloc’s 27 countries the crime has taken place.
